MONTICELLO – Maybe the thought of snow might take our minds off the oppressive heat wave we have been experiencing of late.
It will be here before you know it and Holiday Mountain ski area in Monticello is preparing for it with a significant expansion to restore its place as a family destination. Owner Mike Taylor is overseeing the project, which focuses on reopening the long-closed North Lodge area.
“This year alone. We’re going to reopen this north pod. We call it the north side of the property, and it’s going to reopen 10 trails this year, some old ones and some really cool new ones.”
A 25ft concrete anchor will support a new three-person chairlift.
“About two feet of that concrete is going to be sticking out of the ground. And then there’ll be a steel structure above it with what’s called a bull wheel, and that’s where the skiers will be able to exit,” he said. “And you’ll be coming right off by New York 17, and they can wave at their family as the cars go by. It’s going to be pretty cool.”
For him, the project is personal because the property was originally owned by his great-grandmother.
“We actually bought the property in my great-grandmother’s name, Maude Crawford. Maude Crawford Realty owns the dirt, so I hope she’s smiling down on us, knowing that we’re bringing skiing back to her land.”
