MID-HUDSON – The Red Cross has declared an emergency blood shortage as blood supply fell nearly 25 percent in June.
The agency says blood donors are urgently needed, especially for platelets and types O positive and B negative blood.
Donor Recruitment Supervisor Melissa Clark said there is always a need for blood since it has a shelf life of about 43 days.
“Trauma patients, if somebody needs an emergency surgery, a car accident, but a lot of people who are chronically ill, should they have sickle cell disease, cancer, and also a lot of people who are in childbirth will often need many units of blood,” she said.
Summers are typically slow donor periods because of vacations.
