President Donald Trump did not travel to the NATO summit to give another speech about global cooperation.

He went to deliver a message.

America First.

For decades, American taxpayers have carried a disproportionate share of NATO’s defense burden while many allies failed to meet even the alliance’s minimum spending commitments. Trump made it clear during his first administration that the days of America footing the bill while others fell short had to end. Today, that message is producing results.

NATO members have dramatically increased defense spending since Trump first challenged the alliance. Leaders recently agreed to a long-term goal of investing 5% of gross domestic product in defense and related security spending, a significant increase from the previous 2% benchmark. (reuters.com)

That did not happen by accident.

It happened because President Trump refused to accept the status quo.

For years, foreign leaders criticized his approach. They said he was too blunt. They said he was damaging alliances. They accused him of putting America first instead of putting the world first.

They were right about one thing.

He was putting America first.

And that’s exactly what the American people elected him to do.

An alliance should never mean one nation carries everyone else. NATO was created as a partnership, not a permanent subsidy paid by American taxpayers. Every member benefits from collective security, and every member should contribute accordingly.

President Trump has consistently argued that strong alliances require shared responsibility, not unequal sacrifice.

His message extends beyond military spending.

America First means securing our border before worrying about someone else’s.

It means rebuilding our military before financing endless foreign commitments.

It means protecting American workers, American manufacturing and American energy.

It means remembering that the President’s first obligation is not to Brussels, Paris or Berlin.

It is to the people of the United States.

Critics often portray “America First” as isolationism.

It is not.

America First does not mean America alone.

It means America leads from a position of strength. It means our allies know they can count on us, but they also know they must do their part.

Strong nations make strong alliances.

Weak leadership creates dependence.

President Trump’s NATO trip demonstrated that America can remain the leader of the free world while insisting on fairness, accountability and shared responsibility.

That is not selfish.

That is leadership.

For too long, Washington accepted one-sided arrangements because confronting allies was politically uncomfortable. President Trump chose a different path.

He reminded the world that American generosity should never be mistaken for unlimited obligation.

The message from this NATO summit was clear.

The United States will continue to stand with its allies.

But under President Trump, America will no longer stand alone in paying the bill.

That is what America First looks like.
