President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States would launch new strikes against Iran, warning during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, that Tehran would be hit later in the evening after a fragile ceasefire unraveled.

“I’ll give them a little warning: we’re going to hit them hard tonight,” Trump said.

The president’s remarks came after he declared the ceasefire with Iran effectively over following the latest exchange of live fire. The conflict began in late February and had been under a nominal ceasefire for weeks while negotiations continued, though that pause had been repeatedly tested by armed exchanges involving parties to the conflict.

The collapse followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Iran that was intended to extend the ceasefire for 60 days and provide time for work toward a long-term agreement.

Despite that effort, the temporary peace broke down. Trump’s comments in Ankara signaled a renewed escalation in the conflict and a shift from ceasefire negotiations back toward direct military action.
