Russia launched a pre-dawn attack on Kyiv early Monday, striking the Ukrainian capital with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones one day before NATO leaders are scheduled to meet in Turkey for a summit expected to focus heavily on the war.
Ukraine’s air force said Kyiv was targeted in a combined assault involving ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles. Explosions were heard across the city after air raid sirens sounded, according to CNN.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said at least three people were injured. Fires and damage caused by falling debris were reported in at least two districts of the capital.
Klitschko said people remained trapped inside a multi-story residential building that was heavily damaged in the Podilskyi district.
The attack came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Sunday that intelligence showed Russia was “preparing a new massive strike.”
The latest barrage followed one of Russia’s deadliest attacks on Kyiv since the beginning of the war. Last Thursday, Russian strikes killed at least 30 people in the capital, making it the third-deadliest attack on Kyiv since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The renewed assault comes as world leaders prepare to gather Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey, for a NATO summit that President Donald Trump is expected to attend. Russia’s war against Ukraine is expected to be one of the central issues at the meeting.
Russian forces have increased operations in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, one of Moscow’s main military objectives. At the same time, Ukrainian cities have faced near-nightly waves of missiles and drones.
Ukraine has also escalated its long-range attacks in recent weeks, striking Russian military and energy infrastructure. Those targets have included oil refineries, ports and defense manufacturing facilities.
The latest fighting also followed a nearly 90-minute phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 4. According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Trump again offered to help bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
The Kyiv attack adds urgency to the NATO summit, where allied leaders are expected to discuss Ukraine’s defenses, Russia’s battlefield operations and possible diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
