KINGSTON – The State Department of Transportation has awarded $1.02 million to the towns of New Paltz and Marbletown for road safety improvements to Mountain Rest Road and Mohonk Road.
The funds will be used to install rumble strips as well as high-friction pavement treatments and upgraded curve warning signs.
Mountain Rest Road in New Paltz and Mohonk Road in Marbletown were chosen because they have long been identified as high-risk locations for crashes in which vehicles cross an edge line, center line, or leave the road entirely, often resulting in serious or fatal injuries.
The funds were made available through the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program to support engineering countermeasures that reduce roadway-departure crashes and lessen the severity of those that occur.
“These are highly traveled roads by both cyclists and motorists, as well as major corridors for out-of-town visitors to the Shawangunk Ridge, and these improvements will greatly enhance road safety and protect lives, said Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger.
