WAPPINGERS FALLS – The 17-year-old who was allegedly threatening to commit suicide before threatening police with a knife and subsequently being shot and killed has resulted in a response from the community.  Oscar Granados Colindres was shot by police Saturday morning in the Village of Wappingers Falls after police responded to a report of an Emotionally Disturbed Person (EDP) who was threatening suicide by jumping into the Wappingers Creek.

The initial report of the suicidal person was broadcast to the police at 1 a.m. on Saturday.

At 1:45 a.m., Colindres allegedly threatened police with a knife, and officers discharged their firearms, striking the teen.  He was transported to a Poughkeepsie-area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Mid-Hudson News has learned that Colindres had been a student at Roy C. Ketcham High School before transferring to another school district in the region.  Because of his association with the Wappingers Central School District,  Superintendent, Dr. Dwight Bonk spoke with the family and issued an advisory to the school district community.

“I am very saddened to inform you that I have been made aware that Oscar Granados Colindres, who once attended Roy C. Ketcham HS, passed away earlier this morning,” Bonk said, adding, “As per protocol, the District has activated our Emergency Response Team and will continue to provide the support necessary to the Granados Colindres family and our students at this most difficult time.”

Noting that school district staff will remain available to students and others seeking assistance, Dr. Bonk also expressed condolences.  “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Granados Colindres family, and we remain available to assist as necessary.”

The State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations is continuing its preliminary investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
