Firefighters from several departments battled a house fire in Mahopac Falls early Saturday

MAHOPAC FALLS- The shrill sounds of smoke detectors awakened a Mahopac Falls family early Saturday and when smoke was seen a call to the Putnam 9-1-1 Dispatch Center sent members of the Mahopac Falls Fire Department to the residence on Orchard Road.

Family members evacuated by the time Carmel Police and firefighters arrived shortly after 3 a.m. to find the basement of the home ablaze with a heavy concentration of smoke throughout the residence.

Calls went out for mutual aid and the Mahopac, Putnam Valley, Mohegan Lake and Carmel Fire Departments responded along with the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Putnam-Empress Paramedics, and the Putnam Fire Investigation Team responded.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which caused significant damage to the basement, while other personnel ventilated smoke from the upper floors.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials expressed relief that the occupants of the home were able to safely evacuate: “This incident is another reminder of the importance of working smoke alarms,” said a department spokesperson.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
