A political firestorm erupted this week after billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk indicated he may pursue legal action against Congressman Ro Khanna following accusations that Musk’s government spending cuts contributed to the deaths of millions of children worldwide.
The controversy began when Khanna, a California Democrat, appeared on the “I’ve Had It” podcast and argued that Musk should face congressional investigations over his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the agency tasked with identifying waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending. During the interview, Khanna claimed that cuts to foreign aid programs, particularly through USAID, may have contributed to the deaths of as many as 4.5 million children around the world.
Khanna went even further, saying Musk should be subpoenaed and forced to answer questions if Democrats regain control of Congress. According to Khanna, the focus should not be on the wealth Musk created through his companies but on what he described as the human cost of federal spending reductions.
Musk wasted little time responding.
After reports of Khanna’s comments circulated online, Musk posted a blunt response on X: “Time to sue this liar.” The Tesla and SpaceX CEO also rejected the allegations outright, arguing that DOGE’s efforts were aimed at ensuring accountability and preventing fraud in government-funded aid programs.
Musk defended DOGE’s actions by stating that the agency’s primary standard was verifying where taxpayer dollars were actually going and ensuring aid recipients could be identified. He argued that requiring accountability for federal spending should not be controversial and accused critics of misrepresenting the purpose of the reforms.
Khanna responded to Musk’s legal threat by doubling down on his position. The congressman said he was citing academic research regarding the potential impact of foreign aid reductions and challenged Musk to debate the issue publicly rather than pursue legal action. Khanna also accused Musk of attempting to silence political criticism through the threat of lawsuits.
The dispute highlights a growing battle over the legacy of DOGE and the broader debate surrounding government spending. Supporters argue that Musk’s efforts exposed waste, corruption, and inefficiency within federal programs. Critics contend that reductions in foreign assistance can have serious humanitarian consequences and deserve greater scrutiny.
What began as a policy disagreement has now escalated into a public confrontation between one of the world’s most influential business leaders and a sitting member of Congress. Whether Musk follows through with a lawsuit remains to be seen, but the clash underscores how deeply divided Washington remains over government spending, foreign aid, and accountability.
As both sides dig in, the fight is quickly becoming about more than DOGE. It is now a battle over who gets to define the consequences of government reform and who should be held responsible for those consequences.
