Assemblyman Chris Tague won the Republican primary for the 51st State Senate District on Tuesday, defeating challenger Terry Bernardo, a Sullivan County legislator.

“This victory is one more step toward giving our communities the strong voice and common-sense fighter we need in Albany,” Tague said on Facebook. “I’m grateful, I’m energized, and I’m ready to keep this campaign moving forward. Now we unite, we work, and we win in November.”

Tague, who ran with the support of the district’s Republican committees, had 6,631 votes unofficially, while Blosser finished with 5,663 votes. The 51st Senate District includes all of Delaware, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Otsego counties, as well as portions of Broome, Chenango, and Ulster counties.

The seat is currently held by Peter Oberacker, who opted to run for Congress in the 19th District rather than seek reelection to the Senate. Oberacker won the Republican primary for the congressional seat on Tuesday and will face Democratic incumbent Josh Riley in November. Bernardo, who lives in Rock Hill, lost a primary to Oberacker for the Senate seat three years ago.

Tague will face Democrat Michele Frazier. Tague was first elected to the State Assembly on April 24, 2018. His district consists of all of Greene and Schoharie counties, along with parts of Delaware, Albany, Otsego, and Ulster counties.  Tague was previously elected Schoharie Town supervisor in 2015.

Tague’s campaign has focused on three priorities:  lowering taxes and mandates that he says increase living and business costs; supporting law enforcement and reforming what he called Albany’s failed criminal justice policies to prioritize victims; and protecting family farms, small businesses, and local communities from blanket regulations.
