MONTICELLO – The Monticello Village Board is continuing to hold hearings on the proposed 2026-27 budget with hopes of bringing in a fiscal package with a property tax increase lower than this year’s.
Trustee Gordon Jenkins, a former mayor and significant other to Mayor Rochelle Massey, said last year’s tax hike was 8.5 percent and at this point in discussions, it is down to about four percent.
He would like to see it even lower through shared services or modified policing with the hiring of a constable.
“A constable you can have them go to a couple of the hotspots. A constable is more of a guy who can point out all of the problems to the police,” he said, noting they are peace officers, not police officers, and cannot make arrests. A constable is cheaper or parttime police officers would be good, he said.
Massey could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
