KINGSTON – Ulster County Sheriff Juan Figueroa says it is “appalling and tragic” that county jail corrections officer Andrew Wells allegedly stole over $99,000 from the Sheriff’s Employees Association union while he was treasurer.

The sheriff said Wells “was entrusted to serve this county with integrity upon swearing the oath and betrayed many with his alleged actions.”

Figueroa said the minute the union notified him of the potential criminal conduct, he contacted the district attorney and referred the case to the State Police for investigation.

“As public servants, conduct of this nature will never be tolerated,” the sheriff said.

Wells has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigations.
