President Donald Trump is facing broad public dissatisfaction over his handling of the economy, according to a national survey showing most Americans believe economic conditions are worsening and many are pessimistic about the country’s financial outlook.
The American Research Group survey found that 67% of respondents disapprove of Trump’s handling of economic issues, while 29% approve and 4% are undecided.
Trump’s overall job approval rating was also underwater. Thirty-one percent of respondents said they approve of the way he is performing as president, while 64% said they disapprove. Five percent were undecided.
The findings reflect widespread anxiety about the direction of the economy. Seventy percent of respondents said economic conditions are getting worse, compared with 8% who said they are improving. Seventeen percent said the economy is staying about the same.
Expectations for the year ahead were similarly negative. Nearly 7 in 10 respondents said they expect the economy to be worse a year from now. Nine percent said they expect improvement over the next 12 months, while 15% said they believe conditions will remain unchanged.
The survey found that Americans’ current view of the economy remains overwhelmingly poor. Nearly 8 in 10 respondents rated the economy as bad, very bad or terrible, while 14% described it as excellent, very good or good.
More than half of those surveyed chose “terrible,” the most negative option available.
The pessimism extends to household finances. Sixty-one percent of respondents gave a negative assessment of their own financial situation, while 30% rated their household finances positively.
Two-thirds of Americans said their household finances are getting worse. A much smaller share said their personal financial situation is improving.
The survey also found that most respondents believe the United States is already in a recession. Sixty percent said the country is in an economic slowdown, while 22% said it is not. The rest were unsure.
The results suggest that economic concerns are weighing heavily on public attitudes toward Trump’s presidency. While presidents are routinely judged by voters on economic performance, the survey indicates that many Americans do not believe the economy is improving or that their personal finances are moving in the right direction.
The American Research Group poll was conducted May 16-20 among 1,100 adults nationwide. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
