TOWN OF LLOYD – A proposed cement mixing plant along Route 9W in the Town of Lloyd has drawn praise, ire and questions about zoning regulations from concerned residents.
During Tuesday evening’s town board meeting, a group of residents spoke in favor of the proposal stating it would contribute to the town’s tax base and create jobs for the community. Some even adding that similar businesses already exist in the area. On the flip side, several others spoke against the measure feeling it would only cause more traffic congestion in town and have a negative impact on the environment and health of residents, citing potential ground contamination and air pollution.
However, everyone who spoke during public comment, overwhelmingly agreed that Lloyd is in need of more defined language when it comes to their zoning regulations, particularly for a case like this that threads the needle of what is considered heavy or light industry.
“Zoning decisions have a real impact on quality of life,” said resident Meghan Quinn. “We want common sense zoning that doesn’t jeopardize this town and one that safeguards that principle. Companies will come in and try to exploit the loopholes if we don’t have a clear definition of what is heavy and what is light industry.”
The proposed cement mixing plant comes on the heels of a debate last year regarding the creation of a pet crematorium. That plan was ultimately withdrawn by developers.
