KINGSTON – Several local officials joined Congressman Pat Ryan (D, NY-18) on Friday to highlight ongoing efforts to revitalize Kingston’s Historic Waterfront Business District, including federal funding for infrastructure improvements and waterfront redevelopment projects.
The city is moving forward with a $21.7 million federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant awarded in 2023 for transportation improvements along the waterfront. The project will include pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle connections designed to improve access and mobility throughout the district.
“As a fifth-generation Kingston native, fighting for my hometown is one of the most rewarding parts of this job,” Ryan said. “Delivering a historic $22 million is a massive win for our Kingston community and builds off of years of progress and advocacy at every level. The waterfront in particular is an incredibly special place to me – my family landed at the Rondout when they came from Ellis Island – and with this investment, we’re preserving the rich history of Kingston and all the families who call it home.”
Local officials also announced an additional $250,000 in federal funding to reconstruct a deteriorating bulkhead along the waterfront. Officials said the aging structure supports several historic buildings, and that continued deterioration could threaten the seawall and adjacent properties.
The bulkhead reconstruction project is expected to improve public access to the waterfront by creating a walkway linking new housing developments, local businesses, and a recreational trail.
In addition, $1.8 million has been included in the House appropriations process for improvements to T.R. Gallo Waterfront Park. The funding, requested through the Community Project Funding process for fiscal year 2027, must still be approved by Congress and signed into law before becoming available.
Officials said the combined investments are intended to strengthen waterfront infrastructure, protect historic assets and support continued economic development in Kingston’s waterfront district.
“We were thrilled to receive an unprecedented $21.7 million in Federal RAISE grants thanks to the support of our Senators and Congressman Ryan,” Kingston Mayor Steve Noble said. “We are so grateful for this investment in Kingston, specifically to help us revitalize our Downtown. Our Waterfront area is already vibrant, and we know with this investment, this entire area will see continued economic growth, enhanced amenities for residents and visitors, and much-needed protections to guard against climate-related flooding disasters.”
