President Donald Trump warned Wednesday that Iran would “pay the price” after U.S. forces launched strikes on Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz following the downing of an American Apache helicopter.

The warning came after Washington and Tehran exchanged fire overnight and into Wednesday morning, escalating tensions around the strategic waterway while the Trump administration continued to signal that diplomatic efforts with Iran were not fully abandoned.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Iran had waited too long to negotiate a Middle East peace deal.

“Iran’s Military is a complete and total mess,” Trump wrote. “Much of it, like their Navy and Air Force, doesn’t even exist anymore — They have been completely defeated.”

“They’ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!!” he added.

The president’s comments followed the shooting down of a U.S. Apache attack helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway central to global energy shipping. Trump blamed Tehran for the incident and said a U.S. response was necessary.

U.S. Central Command said American forces began conducting “self-defense strikes” at Trump’s direction at about 5 p.m. Eastern time. CENTCOM described the operation as “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.”

According to Washington, the strikes targeted Iranian radar, air-defense and command-and-control infrastructure around the Strait of Hormuz.

The administration framed the military action as a direct response to the helicopter incident while continuing to leave room for negotiations with Tehran. Trump’s remarks, however, signaled growing frustration with the pace of talks and suggested Iran had missed an opportunity to reach terms more favorable to its government.

The latest exchange marks another escalation in the confrontation around the Strait of Hormuz, where U.S. forces have been operating as tensions with Iran continue.
