There has been a considerable reduction in crypto derivatives trade volume during 2026, which led to debates concerning the operations of traders on centralized exchanges. According to information provided on X by CoinGecko, there was an average trading volume of $4.69 trillion per month in the first four months of 2026 among the top 11 perpetual futures exchanges. The number in 2025 was at $7.1 trillion.

The article drew numerous individuals from the cryptocurrency industry as traders evaluated the market dynamics and the competition among the various exchanges. In addition, it highlighted the rising need for leveraged trades in the market. The chart illustrated the fluctuation in market share among some of the major firms in the market such as Binance, Bybit, OKX, and MEXC.

CoinGecko Data Shows Sharp Volume Decline

The CoinGecko website posted this information together with the graph measuring the monthly perpetual futures trading volume for January 2025 – April 2026. This graph measured the monthly trading volume for the top 11 centralized perpetual exchanges.

As per this information, the monthly trading volume exceeded $9 trillion at times in the year 2025. But there were significantly lower volumes throughout the latter half of 2025 and early 2026. By April 2026, the monthly trading volume stood at around $4.4 trillion.

Perpetual futures continue to be a major sector within cryptocurrency trading. These derivatives enable traders to speculate without having to hold any underlying assets. More volumes often mean greater participation in the markets.

This reduction in volumes came as the result of weakening prices for some of the digital assets. There was weaker price momentum for Bitcoin and Ethereum during parts of 2026 than before.

Binance Maintains Lead as Competition Intensifies

The graph indicates that throughout the whole analysis period, Binance had the biggest market share out of all other companies. The exchange was able to secure around 30-35% of the overall perpetual market throughout the period of January 2025 to April 2026.

Meanwhile, MEXC witnessed a steady increase in terms of market share. The platform grew its market share from around 10% to almost 20% during certain periods presented in the analysis. The same trend can be observed for Bybit and OKX despite the poor state of the markets.

Some traders on the website X connected MEXC’s success with increased retail participation in trading of meme coins and other small-cap cryptocurrencies. As such, companies with a wider range of speculative cryptocurrencies could get more trading activity.

According to CoinGecko’s graph, there was an uneven redistribution of trading volume among various companies.

Lower Leverage Activity Shapes Market Conditions

Perpetual futures trade typically mirrors the sentiments in the general market. Higher volumes and liquidations are observed when there is high leverage trade.

Latest data from CoinGecko indicate reduced speculation by traders in centralized exchanges. Reduced investment in cryptocurrencies through investment products has also been observed by market participants for certain periods in 2026.

Decentralized perpetuity trade has been favored by some traders to centralized exchange. There has been growth in popularity of decentralized perpetual trading among protocols such as Hyperliquid, dYdX, and GMX.

Cryptocurrency analysts will be monitoring for any recovery in trading volume in perpetuity trade for the latter part of 2026. Market participants will be monitoring Bitcoin ETF flow, open interest data, and liquidity in derivatives.
