Israeli officials announced Saturday that Hamas military commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad was killed in a strike in Gaza City, describing him as one of the remaining senior figures tied to the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.

According to the Israeli military, Haddad died during an Israeli airstrike carried out Friday in Gaza City. Israeli officials said he had recently become the head of Hamas’ military wing following the death of his predecessor, Mohammed Sinwar.

The Associated Press reported that Haddad was regarded as one of the principal Hamas commanders involved in organizing and executing the Oct. 7 attacks that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.

Members of Haddad’s family later confirmed his death to the AP on Saturday.

Israeli authorities identified Haddad as one of the final remaining senior Hamas operational leaders connected to the planning of the attacks, which resulted in widespread casualties in southern Israel and led to Israel’s large-scale military campaign against Hamas inside Gaza.

The announcement comes amid continued instability surrounding ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Efforts to secure a longer-term agreement have faced repeated setbacks as negotiators continue disputing several core issues, including demands related to Hamas disarmament, hostage releases, and postwar governance arrangements in Gaza.

Israel has continued targeting Hamas leadership throughout the conflict, arguing the campaign is necessary to dismantle the organization’s military infrastructure and prevent future attacks.

Hamas has not publicly released an official statement regarding Haddad’s reported role or the Israeli military’s claims surrounding his involvement in the Oct. 7 operation.
