BEACON – An off-duty Beacon firefighter, Lt. Robert Simmonds, Jr., is credited with saving a man in distress in the Hudson River off Beacon late Tuesday afternoon.

City Fire Chief Thomas Lucchesi said the man was in a kayak that overturned at around 5:25 p.m. off the shoreline of Long Dock Park.

The fire department was at another incident nearby and launched its rescue boat.

But off-duty Beacon Fire Lt. Robert Simmonds Jr., who was also in the area, jumped into the river, reached the victim and brought him to the shore where city police officers assisted in removing the man from the river.

The kayaker was cared for by EMS personnel and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
