Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed King Charles III and Camilla to the White House on Tuesday, marking the opening of a state visit connected to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The arrival ceremony featured an honor guard, martial music, and displays of both American and British flags across the White House grounds. The leaders stood for the national anthems of both countries before President Trump delivered remarks focused on the historical relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
In his speech, Trump emphasized that American founding principles were shaped over time and influenced by British traditions and culture. He referenced early colonial history and described the development of American identity as rooted in earlier experiences brought by settlers from Britain.
“Here in the shadows of monuments to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, honouring the British King might seem an ironic beginning to our celebration of 250 years of American Independence,” Trump said. “But in fact no tribute could be more appropriate.”
The president continued, stating that before independence, Americans shared a cultural and moral foundation influenced by Britain. He described the founding generation as inheriting traditions developed over centuries.
“Before we ever proclaimed our Independence Americans carried within us the rarest of gifts, moral courage. And it came from a small but mighty Kingdom across the sea,” Trump said.
Trump also referenced a tree planted at the White House in 1991 by Elizabeth II, describing it as a symbol of the historical ties between the two nations. He said the tree reflected how shared roots contributed to long-term growth and stability.
During the address, the president spoke about the evolution of relations between the United States and Britain, noting that former adversaries had become allies in later conflicts. He cited cooperation during major wars of the 20th century as part of a broader shared history.
“Surely they would be delighted that the wounds of war healed into the most cherished friendship,” Trump said, referencing how earlier conflicts gave way to military alliances between the two nations.
The ceremony also included references to historical figures such as John Adams and comparisons between early American leaders and the British monarchy.
The state visit is expected to include multiple events. King Charles III is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress, marking the first time a British monarch has done so. The visit also includes private bilateral meetings at the White House and a formal state dinner hosted by the Trump family in the East Room.
Following the Washington events, the royal delegation is expected to travel to New York for additional engagements, including a meeting with the city’s mayor and participation in a September 11 memorial. The visit will conclude with appearances in Virginia tied to America 250 commemorations.
