MID-HUDSON – In the two years since the state adopted good cause eviction legislation that prevents landlords from removing tenants for without good reason, 21 upstate municipalities have adopted local laws, most recently, the Town of Pleasant Valley.

Other communities in the Mid-Hudson to adopt the law include Fishkill, Hudson, City and Town of Poughkeepsie, Kinston, Beacon and New Paltz.

Sumathy Kumar, the director of the Housing Justice for All Coalition says the local law expands protections against unreasonable rent increases and evictions without cause to over one million New Yorkers.

“It will create stability in people’s homes and lets people put down roots and stay in their communities and neighborhood for a long time to come,” she said.

Now, Kumar said communities need the Real Emergency Stabilization for Tenants(REST) act, sponsored by Assemblywoman Sarahana Shrestha (D, Esopus), that would make rents affordable across the state by allowing communities to adopt rent stabilization and decide who is covered.
