League leader Galatasaray moved to the brink of another domestic title on Sunday with a commanding victory over fierce rival Fenerbahce, but the result was overshadowed by a fresh wave of controversy surrounding match officiating in Turkish football.
During the heated Istanbul derby, Galatasaray took the unusual step of publicly criticizing referees while the match was still in progress. Posting on its official social media account at halftime, the club expressed frustration over decisions it believed had gone against them, despite holding a 1-0 lead at the time.
In strongly worded messages shared in both Turkish and English, the club accused match officials and the video assistant referee system of ignoring what it described as two clear penalty incidents in the first half. The posts went further, alleging bias and hinting at deeper issues within officiating, reflecting long-standing tensions between top clubs and football authorities in the country.
The outburst came just days after Galatasaray announced it was suspending relations with the Turkish Football Federation over disagreements regarding referee appointments. The dispute has added another layer of intensity to an already charged atmosphere surrounding the title race and the governance of the league.
On the pitch, however, Galatasaray delivered a decisive performance that underlined its dominance in recent seasons. The breakthrough came late in the first half when Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen found the net in the 40th minute, capitalizing on momentum after Fenerbahce had earlier squandered a penalty opportunity.
The match tilted further in Galatasaray’s favor in the second half. Barış Alper Yılmaz doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, converting confidently to give his side greater control. Midfielder Lucas Torreira added a third goal in the 83rd minute, sealing a comprehensive 3-0 victory and sparking celebrations among supporters.
Fenerbahce’s difficulties were compounded when goalkeeper Ederson was sent off while the score remained 1-0, leaving the visitors with a numerical disadvantage at a critical stage of the contest. The dismissal further shifted the balance of the game and allowed Galatasaray to press its advantage.
The result leaves Galatasaray seven points clear at the top of the table with just three matches remaining, putting the club within touching distance of a fourth consecutive league title. In contrast, Fenerbahce’s title drought appears set to continue, with the club still searching for its first championship since 2014.
The rivalry between the two Istanbul giants is widely regarded as one of the most intense in world football, fueled by decades of competition, passionate fan bases, and high-stakes encounters. In recent years, however, the balance on the field has increasingly favored Galatasaray, which has maintained a consistent edge in both results and silverware.
Off the field, disputes over refereeing standards have become a recurring theme in the Turkish Super League. Accusations of bias and inconsistency are frequently voiced by clubs, players, and coaches, contributing to an environment of mistrust.
Last season, then-Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho was handed a four-match ban after publicly criticizing match officials, highlighting how tensions between teams and the federation have repeatedly spilled into disciplinary action.
Sunday’s derby has now added another chapter to that ongoing debate, with Galatasaray’s unprecedented in-game criticism likely to draw scrutiny from football authorities. As the season approaches its conclusion, both the title race and the broader issue of officiating integrity remain firmly in the spotlight.
