In the aftermath of the shocking shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD), Pennsylvania State Representative and former Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta renewed calls for stricter gun control measures, specifically advocating for a ban on what he described as “military-grade weapons.”
The annual WHCD event, held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., was disrupted when alleged gunman Cole Allen reportedly opened fire near a security checkpoint. Law enforcement officials later confirmed that Allen was taken into custody at the scene and that two firearms were recovered from him — a handgun and a shotgun.
Following the attack, Kenyatta responded publicly on social media platform X, addressing discussions about whether relocating the event to a White House ballroom would improve security compared to hosting it at a hotel venue. In his remarks, he argued that broader firearm restrictions are necessary to prevent such incidents, reiterating Democratic calls for banning so-called military-style weapons.
However, reporting indicated that the firearms allegedly used in the attack were legally purchased in California. According to law enforcement sources cited by NBC News, one of the weapons recovered was a Maverick pump-action shotgun — a manually operated firearm commonly used for hunting and sport shooting — while the second was a standard pistol.
Neither weapon fits the technical definition of a “military-grade” firearm, a term that is often debated in political discussions and lacks a precise legal definition under federal law. Pump-action shotguns and civilian-model handguns are widely available across the United States, subject to varying state regulations.

Critics of Kenyatta’s proposal argue that because the suspect allegedly used legally obtained firearms that do not fall under typical “assault weapon” classifications, a ban targeting military-style rifles would not have directly prevented the incident. They contend that the shooting highlights broader issues related to security, enforcement, and mental health rather than solely the type of firearm involved.
Supporters of expanded gun restrictions, on the other hand, maintain that any high-profile shooting underscores the need for comprehensive reform, including tighter background checks, waiting periods, and limits on high-capacity weaponry.
The incident has reignited a familiar national debate over gun policy, with lawmakers divided over whether new federal legislation would meaningfully reduce such attacks. As investigations continue into the suspect’s motives and background, the political ramifications of the WHCD shooting are likely to extend well beyond the event itself.
