MIDDLETOWN – For Orange County Legislator Janet Sutherland, the best part of prom season is watching a teenager light up when she finds the perfect dress.

Sutherland and other volunteers, including Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano, Assemblywoman Paula Kay, Wawayanda Town Supervisor Denise Quinn, and Orange County Legislator DeShanda Carter, have assisted with Temple Sinai’s free formalwear event during prom season.

“It is such a great event and gives kids a chance to experience their prom without worrying about the cost,” Sutherland said. “I had such a fun time meeting some of the young women and helping them find a dress for their special night.”

The second and final formalwear event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Temple Sinai, located at 75 Highland Avenue in Middletown. Organizer Josephine Bloomfield said any student is welcome to attend the event.

“We do not ask any questions and are happy to help them pick something out that they will love,” Bloomfield said. “Doing this makes us feel good, and it is always amazing.”

Bloomfield said she and her husband began collecting prom formalwear for students with the Minisink Valley Rotary about 20 years ago. The couple collected about 30 dresses and suits for that first event. About 600 items were donated in 2025, including new accessories from generous stores such as Macy’s at the Galleria at Crystal Run in the Town of Wallkill.

Temple Sinai Men’s Club, United Presbyterian Church and dozens of other volunteers are now also part of the event.
