LIBERTY – Former Sullivan County District Attorney Stephen Lungen died on Monday, April 13, his longtime colleague and friend former Orange County DA Frank Phillips said.
Lungen retired after almost three decades years as DA, a role in which he mentored by Phillips when he first took office in 1986.
“Steven Lungen was a dynamic prosecutor. He served in Sullivan County for 28 years and retied in 2009,” Phillips said. “I first met him in 1986 when I became district attorney. He was a mentor to me in my first few years as district attorney and we became very close professionally and personally.”
Phillips said Lungen, who was 79, loved his family, loved his country and loved serving the people of Sullivan County.
Lungen served in the Army during the Vietnam war and was awarded a Bronze Star with a V for Valor and a Purple Heart.
