Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell convened an urgent meeting this week with leaders of major U.S. financial institutions to address emerging cybersecurity risks associated with a new artificial intelligence system developed by Anthropic.

The closed-door session, held Thursday, included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent along with executives from leading banks such as Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo, according to Bloomberg.

The meeting was organized on short notice, reflecting heightened concern within financial and regulatory circles over a new category of cyber threats linked to advanced AI capabilities.

At the center of the discussion was Anthropic’s “Mythos” model, which the company has described as capable of identifying and exploiting weaknesses in operating systems and web browsers when prompted by users. Officials and industry leaders examined the potential implications of such technology if misused, particularly within critical financial infrastructure.

Access to the model has been limited to a small group of major firms, including Amazon, Apple and JPMorgan Chase, as part of a controlled rollout.

The discussions are connected to an initiative known as “Project Glasswing,” which is focused on identifying and addressing vulnerabilities before similar tools become more widely available. Officials said the effort aims to strengthen defenses against potential exploitation by malicious actors.

The gathering underscores increasing attention among regulators and financial institutions to the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, particularly as more advanced systems are developed and deployed across critical sectors.
