The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Friday the elimination of Abd al-Rahman Ammar Hassan Khudari, a senior terrorist operative who led the deadly infiltration and massacre at Kibbutz Nir Oz during the October 7, 2023, attacks.
Khudari, a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror organization, commanded the assault on the kibbutz, where over 500 Hamas-led militants and looters breached the community, killing residents, burning homes, and taking civilians hostage. The IDF also struck three additional Hamas terrorists in the operation.
Attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz
On October 7, 2023, as part of Hamas’s coordinated surprise assault on Israel, Palestinian militants from Gaza infiltrated Nir Oz, a small agricultural community in the northwestern Negev desert near the Gaza border. The attackers killed scores of residents, set homes ablaze, and abducted civilians. In total, 47 people were murdered and 76 taken hostage—representing approximately one-quarter of the kibbutz’s population. Of those abducted, nine remain in captivity.
The assault was part of the broader October 7 massacre, in which Hamas and allied terrorists killed more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and abducted over 250 others.
Background on Kibbutz Nir Oz
Founded on October 1, 1955, as one of the first Nahal settlements, Nir Oz was established as a military outpost to help secure Israel’s southern border. Over the decades, the kibbutz faced repeated attacks from Gaza, including rocket fire, sniper incidents, mortar attacks, and tunnel threats. A mortar strike in 2008 killed one employee and wounded four others.
The October 7 attack devastated the community: 64 residents were murdered, 76 were kidnapped, and many homes were looted and destroyed. Since the massacre, surviving residents and the broader community have focused on recovery, rebuilding Nir Oz.
