Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that Ukraine supports the newly announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, adding that Kyiv would be prepared to take similar steps if Russia agrees to halt its attacks.
In a statement posted on X, Zelenskyy said Ukraine has consistently called for a cessation of hostilities in its ongoing war with Russia and views the Middle East ceasefire as a potential model for advancing diplomatic efforts. “Ukraine has always called for a ceasefire in the war waged by Russia here in Europe against our state and our people, and we support the ceasefire in the Middle East and the Gulf that paves the way for diplomatic efforts,” he wrote.
“It is obvious to everyone that a ceasefire can create the right preconditions for agreements,” Zelenskyy added.
Ukraine has previously expressed support for U.S. military actions against Iran, citing Tehran’s role as a supplier of drones to Russia. Iranian-made drones have been used extensively in strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure and population centers during the conflict.
Kyiv has repeatedly called on Moscow to agree to a full ceasefire as a step toward negotiating a broader peace agreement. Russian officials have stated that any halt in fighting would require agreement on comprehensive terms before implementation.
In addition to its diplomatic position, Ukraine has contributed personnel to efforts in the Middle East related to countering drone threats. According to Zelenskyy, more than 200 Ukrainian specialists have been deployed to assist with defensive measures.
“Ukrainian expert military teams will continue to work in the region to help further develop security capabilities,” he said.
Zelenskyy’s remarks link developments in the Middle East to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe, emphasizing Ukraine’s position that a ceasefire can serve as a foundation for negotiations if both sides are willing to suspend hostilities.
