President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States has begun direct diplomatic engagement with Iran, leading to a temporary suspension of planned strikes on Iranian energy facilities.

In a statement shared publicly, Trump said discussions between the two countries had taken place over the prior two days and described them as yielding positive momentum toward easing tensions. “I am [pleased] to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump said in a post.

He added that the nature of the talks prompted a shift in military posture, ordering a pause in any planned operations targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure. “Based on the tenor and tone of these in depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, witch [sic] will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions,” he said.

The directive establishes a five-day delay in potential military action, contingent on whether negotiations continue to show progress. Trump indicated that discussions are expected to continue throughout the week but did not provide details regarding the location of the talks or the officials involved.

The announcement signals a shift from prior expectations of imminent military action, placing emphasis instead on ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving tensions between the two countries.
