During a recent broadcast of The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC, host Ali Velshi delivered a sharp critique of President Donald Trump, accusing him of steering the United States into a series of controversial and distracting actions that undermine both democracy and urgent national priorities.
Velshi argued that Trump’s leadership style—marked by what he described as constant political turmoil—has overwhelmed the public and diverted attention away from critical issues. Among his strongest criticisms was the claim that Trump initiated “a super-expensive war of choice” against Iran, based on what he called an unproven threat and without the necessary approval from Congress.
According to Velshi, this is just one element of a broader pattern. He outlined what he described as a “multi-front attack” on American democratic institutions, pointing to alleged misuse of the Department of Justice to target political opponents, the imposition of controversial tariffs, and the deterioration of relationships with long-standing U.S. allies.
He also highlighted ongoing global and domestic challenges that he believes have been worsened under Trump’s leadership, including Russia-Ukraine War and persistent inflation concerns. Beyond policy issues, Velshi criticized what he described as unusual or alarming developments, referencing events such as a North Korea-style military parade and other unconventional activities, which he suggested contribute to a sense of political chaos.
Velshi argued that this constant stream of controversy is not accidental but part of a broader strategy often associated with authoritarian systems—keeping the public distracted and overwhelmed. “It’s a lot,” he said, emphasizing that such an environment leaves little room for meaningful reflection on what the country could achieve if its focus and resources were directed toward more constructive goals.
One of those goals, he stressed, is addressing climate change. Velshi lamented that despite the arrival of spring, many parts of the country are already experiencing unusual weather patterns—an example, he suggested, of a rapidly changing climate that demands urgent attention.
While expressing pessimism about what he called “wasted years,” Velshi noted that external forces—such as market dynamics and global events—may push progress on climate action faster than the political system currently allows. Still, he emphasized that meaningful change ultimately depends on restoring democratic accountability.
He concluded by drawing a connection between pro-democracy movements and climate activism, arguing that both are part of a broader struggle to reclaim public agency. Referencing upcoming demonstrations like the No Kings rally, Velshi suggested that those advocating for democratic reforms and those pushing for climate justice are united by a common goal.
In his view, once democratic institutions are strengthened and public control is restored, tackling climate change must become the nation’s top priority.
