President signals potential large-scale response after Iranian strikes on regional gas infrastructure following Israeli attack on major Iranian energy site.

President Donald Trump warned of a potential large-scale U.S. response after Iran launched retaliatory strikes following an Israeli attack on a key Iranian gas facility, as escalating exchanges across the Persian Gulf raise concerns about broader regional conflict and threats to global energy infrastructure.
In a Truth Social statement, Trump said Israel carried out a strike on Iran’s South Pars Gas Field, describing it as a limited operation targeting only part of the facility. “Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran,” Trump wrote, adding that only “a relatively small section of the whole has been hit.”
Trump said the United States “knew nothing about this particular attack” and stressed that Qatar “was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen.”
According to the president, Iran responded by striking “a portion of Qatar’s LNG gas facility,” which he described as “unjustifiable and unfair,” stating Tehran lacked “any of the pertinent facts pertaining to the South Pars attack.”
Trump further stated that “no more attacks will be made by Israel pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack” Qatar again. He warned that if Qatari liquefied natural gas infrastructure is targeted in future attacks, “the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before.”
He added that he does not want to authorize such action “because of the long term implications that it will have on the future of Iran,” but said he “will not hesitate” if further escalation occurs.
The developments come amid a rapid escalation in hostilities tied to energy infrastructure across the Gulf region. Reports indicate that Iran’s retaliation has already impacted multiple energy sites, including damage to Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial complex, prompting diplomatic fallout and regional tensions.
Military exchanges between Iran and Israel have continued, though at a reportedly reduced pace compared to earlier stages of the conflict. A strike in Iran’s Dorud county reportedly resulted in civilian casualties, according to reporting by Al Jazeera.
The escalation has also affected global shipping routes, with tankers reportedly idling in the Gulf of Oman amid uncertainty over safe passage. Iranian lawmakers have proposed imposing tolls and restrictions on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for global oil and gas shipments.
European leaders have urged de-escalation. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking in comments reported by The Independent, said, “I am particularly grateful that the US president sent a signal last night that he prepared to bring the fighting to an end.” French President Emmanuel Macron also called for renewed diplomatic engagement, stating, “We will obviously defend a de-escalation, a return to stability in the Middle East,” and urging all sides to “give negotiations a chance again” and “return to reason.”
Despite calls for restraint, Iranian officials signaled continued military action. A spokesman for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that retaliation is ongoing, stating, “We warn the enemy that you made a major mistake by attacking the energy infrastructure of … Iran… the next attacks on your energy infrastructure and that of your allies will not stop until their complete destruction.”
Reports from across the region indicate additional incidents involving energy infrastructure, including missile interceptions in Saudi Arabia, attacks reported in Kuwait and Bahrain, and shutdowns at facilities in the United Arab Emirates due to debris from intercepted strikes. Maritime incidents have also been reported, including a vessel fire near the UAE port of Khor Fakkan.
A summary of regional developments outlined by Al Jazeera noted multiple coordinated or related incidents affecting energy production and transport infrastructure across several Gulf nations.
The unfolding situation underscores growing concerns that continued escalation could disrupt critical oil and gas supply routes, with potential impacts extending beyond the region into global energy markets.
