LAKE CARMEL – SPCA officials are on the lookout for individuals responsible for killing and mutilating seven chickens, roosters and doves and dumping their remains off Route 52 in the vicinity of Lake Carmel.

Putnam County SPCA Chief Ken Ross reported the discovery Tuesday that was similar to a previous finding last fall when a number of birds were decapitated and mutilated before being dumped near the lake.

In October 2025, officials offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder of the birds as well as those who killed and mutilated a pigeon and rooster in April of last year before dumping their bodies into the lake.

At the time, Chief Ross said the animals had been drained of blood, and items described as possible ritual artifacts were recovered, raising concerns the killings could be ritualistic in nature.

Anyone with information about any of the discoveries is asked to contact the Putnam County SPCA at 845-520-6915.

All information will be kept confidential.
