Minnesota politics is heating up again as Ilhan Omar now faces a new Democratic primary challenge that could shake up one of the most closely watched congressional races in the country.

A former government immigration attorney, Julie T. Le, has officially launched a campaign to challenge Omar in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, setting up what could become a major intra-party battle ahead of the 2026 election.

A Challenger With an Immigration Background

Le gained national attention earlier this year during a tense courtroom hearing involving immigration enforcement cases. While addressing a federal judge, she expressed frustration with the legal system and workload surrounding immigration litigation, declaring in court that “the system sucks” and “this job sucks.”

Shortly after the incident went viral, Le was removed from her role working on immigration cases. Now she says the experience convinced her that real change must come through legislation rather than the courtroom.

That realization, she says, is what pushed her to run for Congress.

Le previously worked with the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and says her campaign will focus on immigration reform, education funding, and healthcare access.

A Primary Battle Inside the Democratic Party

Omar, a prominent progressive voice in Congress since first being elected in 2018, has faced primary challenges before but has remained politically strong in the heavily Democratic Minneapolis-based district.

Still, the entry of another challenger highlights ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party over issues like immigration enforcement, public safety, and political strategy.

Le has signaled she wants to bring a different tone to the race, describing her approach as more pragmatic and focused on fixing broken systems she says she witnessed firsthand.

Her campaign is expected to formally launch in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, as she begins building support in the district.

Why This Race Matters Nationally

Even though the district strongly favors Democrats, the primary itself could draw national attention.

Omar is one of the most recognizable members of the progressive “Squad” in Congress, and her political career has frequently been the center of national debates on immigration, foreign policy, and progressive politics.

A serious primary challenge could test how strong her support remains among voters in Minneapolis and surrounding communities.

Bottom Line

For now, the race is just beginning.

But the entrance of a former immigration attorney into the Democratic primary ensures that Ilhan Omar’s re-election campaign will not go unchallenged.

And as the 2026 election cycle ramps up, this Minnesota race could become one of the most closely watched primaries in the country.
