Washington DC, Mike Pence and Italian Senator Giulio Terzi expressed support for a proposal by the Iranian opposition to form a provisional government, describing it as a potential step toward democratic change in Iran.
In statements released in March 2026, the two political figures said the announcement by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) regarding the creation of a provisional government could mark a significant moment in efforts to establish a democratic system in the country.
The proposal, put forward by NCRI leader Maryam Rajavi, outlines a transitional framework aimed at organizing elections and establishing a democratic republic.
Pence said recent developments in Iran have intensified calls for political change and argued that the international community should support the Iranian people’s right to determine their country’s future.
He also praised the activities of opposition groups known as “Resistance Units,” describing them as organized networks challenging the authority of the Iranian government and calling for broader international recognition of the opposition movement.
Terzi echoed those remarks, saying international participation in recent conferences organized by the opposition reflects growing global attention to political developments inside Iran.
According to Terzi, Rajavi’s proposed 10-point plan outlines a roadmap for a future Iranian state based on democratic governance, human rights, and the separation of religion and government.
Both leaders said the proposal for a provisional government aims to oversee a transitional period leading to free elections and the establishment of a democratic political system.
They concluded by emphasizing what they described as the importance of supporting democratic aspirations among the Iranian people and encouraging international engagement with proposals for political reform in the country.
