(WASHINGTON D.C.) – The Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. is set to become one of the most significant and symbolic events in modern INDYCAR history. Scheduled for August 21–23, 2026, the race marks the first‑ever INDYCAR street race held on the National Mall, transforming the heart of the nation’s capital into a high‑speed motorsports showcase.
This landmark event is part of the America 250 celebrations, honoring the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. With a backdrop of national monuments, federal buildings, and historic avenues, the Freedom 250 blends racing spectacle with patriotic significance.
The event was formally established earlier in 2026 through an executive order, making it a centerpiece of the country’s semi quincentennial festivities.
Federal and city officials have emphasized the symbolic power of hosting a major motorsports event in the capital. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Bergum described it as “a combination of history and horsepower,” underscoring the unique fusion of national pride and racing culture.
Today, INDYCAR unveiled the official course layout revealing a 1.7‑mile, seven‑turn street circuit weaving through some of the most recognizable locations in the United States.

Key Track Features:
Stretches along Pennsylvania and Independence Avenues
High‑speed sections on 3rd, 7th, and 9th Streets
Views of the U.S. Capitol, Air and Space Museum, and other Smithsonian landmarks
A start/finish line positioned less than half a mile from the Capitol dome
The layout is designed to be fast, technical, and visually stunning — a course that challenges drivers while showcasing the capital city to millions of viewers.
“This circuit is unlike any other street race we’ve seen,” said two‑time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion and back‑to‑back Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden, who had the opportunity to tour the circuit Monday morning. “You’ve got a high‑speed section down Pennsylvania Avenue that will reward commitment and precision, mixed with technical corners around 9th Street that will demand respect. Racing through the heart of American history, with those amazing landmarks lining the course, is going to be incredibly powerful. I can’t wait to be back here to race and celebrate America’s birthday at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.”
Officials anticipate over one million spectators lining the National Mall and surrounding streets, with the event free and open to the public.
This makes the Freedom 250 not only one of the most accessible races on the INDYCAR calendar but also potentially one of the most attended motorsports events in North American history.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix weekend will include:
INDYCAR practice, qualifying, and the main event
Support series sessions
Fan zones and public viewing areas
America 250 cultural and historical programming
The Freedom 250 represents a bold expansion of INDYCAR’s footprint, bringing the series to a globally recognizable location and introducing the sport to new audiences. With its combination of historic setting, massive attendance, and high‑speed action, the race is poised to become a signature event on the schedule for years to come.
