MAHOPAC – Everyone was Irish on Sunday in Mahopac when crowds estimated at more than 7,500 cheered as scores of marchers proceeded along Route 6 during Putnam’s 49th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Following one of the most severe winters in years with heavy snow and arctic cold, even the weatherman cooperated when overcast skies brightened and the sun shone for the first time in days.

John Molloy, vice chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, looked up at the heavens and commented, “Who says the Good Lord doesn’t look down on his Irish brethren?”

The Putnam parade, New York State’s third-largest wearing-of-the-green extravaganza, consisted of six divisions this year, containing 64 different units with Tommy Feighery serving as Grand Marshall.

Pipe and Drum Corps were joined by schools, fraternal organizations, Boy and Girl Scouts, marching bands, members of fire departments, the Fraternal Order of Police, Putnam Humane Society, United for the Troops, the West Putnam Setanta Gaelic Football Club, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the American Cancer Society and the Emerald Association.
