COLD SPRING – Putnam County will be sponsoring a $2.2 million application to the state allowing for the construction of sidewalks in Cold Spring and Philipstown that will allow pedestrians to walk from the village to Little Stony Point without traversing dangerous Route 9D.

Putnam is eligible for 80 percent of the cost if its application to the state Transportation Alternatives Program is successful while the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail Inc. has pledged the remaining 20 percent or $450,000.

Putnam Legislator Nancy Montgomery, who represents the greater Philipstown area on the nine-member governing body, was appreciative that Putnam has become the lead applicant. “Projects of this scale succeed only when government works constructively with our municipal, state and nonprofit partners,” she said.

The Fjord Trail, a proposed 7.5-mile linear park connecting Cold Spring and Beacon, is designed to ease overcrowding in the village and along Route 9D. Visitors to Putnam often walk from the Cold Spring Metro-North Railroad station to reach Little Stony Point and points beyond causing a hazardous condition.
