New intelligence disclosures indicate that Russia has supplied Iran with information that could assist Tehran in identifying and striking U.S. military forces and equipment in the Middle East as hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran intensify.
According to individuals familiar with the matter cited by the Associated Press, the information passed to Iran could be used to help locate American warships, aircraft, and other military assets operating in the region. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the intelligence.
“Russia has provided Iran with information that can help Tehran strike the U.S. military,” according to a breaking update circulated on social media by the Associated Press.
The sources cautioned that while Moscow has shared intelligence with Tehran, U.S. intelligence officials have not concluded that Russia is directing Iran on how to use the information.
“The people, who were not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, cautioned that the U.S. intelligence has not uncovered that Russia is directing Iran on what to do with the information,” the report stated.
The alleged intelligence transfer marks the first known instance of Russia providing operational assistance to Iran since the war expanded to include U.S. and Israeli strikes targeting Iranian military capabilities and leadership.
Coverage by CBS News described the intelligence support as the first confirmed assistance from Moscow to Tehran during the conflict.
“The intelligence assistance is the first known assistance Russia is giving to Iran, as the U.S. and Israel continue to strike at the Iranian regime and its military capabilities. The intelligence aid from Russia was first reported by the Washington Post,” the report said.
Russian officials have acknowledged ongoing diplomatic contact with Tehran but have not confirmed any intelligence-sharing activities. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Moscow remains in communication with Iranian leadership.
The remarks followed statements by Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, who said Russia and China were supporting Iran politically and “in other ways,” according to reporting cited by CBS.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also signaled opposition to the military campaign being carried out against Iran. In comments circulated online, Lavrov said Moscow would seek to prevent further operations targeting Tehran.
“Russia will do everything to create an atmosphere that will make US and Israel operations against Iran impossible,” Lavrov said in remarks shared on social media.

The reports have drawn attention as Washington and Moscow had spent more than a year attempting to rebuild diplomatic and economic channels after a period of heightened tensions.
Observers note that the alleged intelligence sharing resembles the support the United States has provided to Ukraine during its conflict with Russia, where American intelligence has been used to help Ukrainian forces target Russian military assets.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald commented on the development in a widely circulated post that compared the situation with the U.S. role in Ukraine.
“I can’t believe that Russia would aid and help a country that is at war with the US! The US would never do that to Russia. Imagine us funding, arming and helping some other country target Russian troops and cities,” Greenwald wrote.

The revelations come amid continued military operations targeting Iranian forces and infrastructure. The United States and Israel have carried out a series of strikes aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities and leadership structure, prompting retaliatory actions and raising concerns that the conflict could widen further across the region.
U.S. officials have not publicly confirmed additional details regarding the intelligence-sharing allegations or the scope of Russia’s involvement. However, the reports underscore growing concerns among Western officials that the conflict could increasingly draw in outside powers as the fighting continues.
