President Donald Trump said the United States will accept no negotiated settlement with Iran other than the “unconditional surrender” of its leadership, issuing the demand in a public message as the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate.

In a statement posted Friday morning on social media, Trump wrote that the United States would not pursue a diplomatic agreement unless Iran’s current leadership relinquishes power.

“There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER! After that, and the selection of a GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s), we, and many of our wonderful and very brave allies and partners, will work tirelessly to bring Iran back from the brink of destruction, making it economically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before,” the president wrote in a post that can be viewed here.

Trump added that he believes Iran could ultimately recover economically after the conflict.

“IRAN WILL HAVE A GREAT FUTURE. ‘MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN (MIGA!),’” he wrote.

The statement comes less than a week after U.S. forces carried out Operation Epic Fury, a military campaign conducted alongside Israel targeting Iranian leadership and military infrastructure. The operation resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with dozens of other senior officials associated with the Iranian government.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is preparing for the possibility of additional escalation, including the deployment of U.S. ground forces.

In an interview with NBC News, Araghchi told journalist Tom Llamas that Iran is prepared to confront American troops if they are deployed.

“We [Iran] didn’t ask for a ceasefire even last time. In previous time, it was Israel who asked for a ceasefire. They asked for an unconditional ceasefire after 12 days that we resisted against their aggression,” Araghchi said in remarks reported by NBC News.

“Because we are confident that we can confront them [the troops], and that would be a big disaster for them,” he added.

Trump’s comments were issued as Congress debated the president’s authority to continue military operations in Iran. In the days before the social media post, both chambers of Congress rejected resolutions seeking to restrict the administration’s ability to conduct strikes without explicit congressional authorization.

In the Senate vote, Democratic Sen. John Fetterman was the only member of his party to join most Republicans in opposing the measure.

The fighting has already led to casualties among American forces. At least six U.S. servicemembers have been killed in retaliatory attacks on American bases in the Middle East following the initial strikes on Iran.

Trump has warned that additional losses may occur before the conflict concludes.

Meanwhile, public opinion in the United States appears divided over the military campaign. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Sunday found that 27 percent of Americans approve of the strikes against Iran, while 43 percent disapprove and 29 percent said they were unsure.
