Lord Peter Mandelson, a senior Labour figure and former British ambassador to the United States, was arrested in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office following alleged revelations concerning his communications with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 72-year-old man was arrested Monday, Feb. 23, as part of an ongoing investigation into a “former Government Minister.” Officers executed search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas prior to the arrest.

In a statement updating the investigation, police said the individual was taken to a London police station for questioning. “This follows search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas. We are not able to provide further information at this stage to prevent prejudicing the integrity of the investigation,” the force said.

Mandelson was seen leaving his London residence accompanied by police officers and entering a waiting vehicle.

The arrest follows allegations stemming from emails reportedly published by the U.S. Department of Justice that reference communications between Mandelson and Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Among the materials are claims that Mandelson may have shared confidential British government information with Epstein. Those assertions have not been tested in court, and Mandelson has denied criminal wrongdoing.

The Metropolitan Police announced on Feb. 3 that they had begun reviewing the material connected to the case.

Mandelson has held prominent roles in British and European politics over several decades, including serving as a UK government minister, European Union commissioner, and ambassador to Washington. He was appointed to the ambassadorial post by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Following the allegations, Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords and left the Labour Party. He has long been regarded as an influential figure within the party and was widely reported to have played a role in Starmer’s rise to leadership.

Authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the evidence under review or potential next steps in the investigation. The inquiry remains ongoing.
