TUMBLER RIDGE, British Columbia—A 17-year-old transgender student, identified as Jesse Strang, is the suspected shooter in a mass killing at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School that left 10 dead, including the gunman, and 25 injured, according to authorities and social media reports.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to an active shooter alert late Tuesday, discovering six victims dead inside the school and two more at a nearby residence. A ninth victim died en route to the hospital, while the shooter was found with a self-inflicted fatal wound, Global News reported.

Strang, who reportedly began identifying as a woman in 2023, was described by locals as a “teen boy dressed as a girl,” leading to confusion in early police and media reports, where the shooter was referred to as a “gun person” or “woman in a dress.” Some critics, including Libs of TikTok, alleged that authorities avoided specifying the shooter’s biological sex to prevent “misgendering.”

A Community in Shock

British Columbia’s Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Nina Krieger, called the attack “horrific,” stating that its impact would be felt “throughout the community and the country for some time.” Tumbler Ridge, a small town in northeastern B.C. near the Alberta border, has a population of roughly 175 students in grades 7–12 at the school.

The massacre is Canada’s deadliest school shooting since 1989, when 14 women were killed at École Polytechnique in Montreal. More recently, in 2016, a 17-year-old student killed four and injured seven in La Loche, Saskatchewan.

Gun Laws and Unanswered Questions

Canada enforces strict gun regulations, requiring firearms to be unloaded, locked, and licensed. Hundreds of models are banned outright, and illegal possession carries severe penalties. Despite these laws, the Tumbler Ridge shooting has reignited debates over school safety, mental health, and gun access.

Authorities have not yet disclosed how Strang obtained the weapon or the motive behind the attack. Social media posts suggest the shooter had a history of mental health struggles, though officials have not confirmed these claims.

As the community mourns, investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy, while Canadians grapple with the shocking violence that has shattered a quiet town.
