During a passionate segment on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Tuesday, political commentator Donny Deutsch strongly defended Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance, calling it a vibrant and authentic reflection of America’s evolving identity.

Deutsch argued that anyone who failed to see the performance as representative of the nation “needs their head examined.”

Deutsch admitted that he was initially unfamiliar with Bad Bunny’s music when the artist was announced as a halftime headliner. “When I heard they were booking Bad Bunny, I thought, okay, I don’t really know his music,” he said. “Then he started to sing — and I didn’t understand a word —but I was completely drawn in. It was majestic.”

Despite not understanding the lyrics, Deutsch said the emotion and message of the performance transcended language. He emphasized that the show radiated joy, unity, and inclusivity. “I don’t care what the words were,” he explained.

“If you couldn’t feel the joy, the inclusivity, the love over hate  which they literally expressed by saying ‘God bless America’  then you missed something powerful. That was one of the most American things I’ve seen in a long time.”

According to Deutsch, the performance symbolized the cultural transformation of the United States into a more diverse and multicultural society. He described the moment as a “cultural tell,” arguing that rejecting such a display reflects resistance to the country’s demographic and cultural shifts.

“We are becoming a multicultural nation, and in the next decade we will be less majority white,” Deutsch stated. “If you have an issue with that, you need to look hard in the mirror.”

He contrasted the halftime show’s tone with what he described as more divisive performances elsewhere. “That was joy.

That was inclusivity,” he said. “If you switched the channel and saw something rooted in anger or exclusivity, the difference was clear. One celebrated who we are becoming. The other leaned into division.”

Deutsch added that he felt personally moved by the experience. Though he initially felt like an outsider to Bad Bunny’s music, he said the performance made him feel welcomed and included.

“I was proud to be an American watching that,” he said. “And I was proud to be someone who may not have been familiar with his world but was drawn into it.”

Addressing critics in conservative media who labeled the performance “un-American,” Deutsch pushed back forcefully. “You’ve got people in right-wing media going off the rails, calling it an insult,” he said. “But that was beautiful. That was joy. That was a celebration of who we are.”

He concluded by urging those who were offended to reflect on their reactions. “If you have a problem with that moment, you really need to do some soul searching,” Deutsch said.

“I’m not judging anyone, but that was a celebration of America’s diversity and spirit. And if you don’t think that represents us, then maybe it’s time to examine why.”
