CHELSEA – A fire destroyed a home in the Chelsea Fire District on Sunday night, partially due to inaccessible fire hydrants.  Firefighters from the Chelsea and Castle Point Fire Departments responded within three minutes to a reported vehicle fire in a garage around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday during the snowstorm.  When the firefighters arrived, they found a heavy fire in the garage and on the second floor of the structure.  With a water supply more than 1,000 feet away, a second alarm was declared, bringing additional manpower and apparatus to the scene of the raging fire.
The fire, according to officials at the scene, the building’s construction and water supply issues allowed the fire to engulf the entire attic, forcing the firefighters out of the building.
Firefighters from multiple departments remained on the scene for seven hours, battling freezing temperatures, limited water, and icy conditions before the fire was determined to be extinguished.
The Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division was at the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the devastating fire.

Chelsea fire officials are using this fire to promote the need for residents to remove snow and landscaping from the area surrounding fire hydrants on their property.
