NEWBURGH – Newburgh security monitor Tyreek Johnson is being credited with saving a choking first-grader who got something stuck in her throat that she was eating at Vails Gate STEAM Academy cafeteria in New Windsor.
Johnson employed the Heimlich Maneuver on the child when he noticed she was in distress, and once the food was dislodged, he took her to the nurse to have her evaluated.
This was not the first time Johnson performed the Heimlich Maneuver. In 2023, he performed the life-saving technique on a second grader in distress in the same cafeteria.
All NECSD security monitors are regularly trained in Basic Life Saver First Aid, and are CPR and AED certified. In addition, all School Nurses and School Nurse Teachers, and athletic coaches are required to complete regular training.
This year, all administrators received CPR and AED training as well as during a professional development during the summer months.
