GOSHEN – The Republican Party has held the majority in the Orange County Legislature most of its existence over the last 55 years, but that could change when the lawmakers reorganize.
With former Democratic Legislator Matthew Turnbull selected to fill the vacant District 1 seat following Republican Katie Bonelli’s resignation, the parties are split 10-10 with one independent member – Michael Amo.
His vote could shift the political power and the election of a new chair – Democrat Laurie Tautel or Republican Janet Sutherland.
Amo has traditionally been closely aligned with the Village of Kiryas Joel and the town that envelops it – Palm Tree, as well as the Town of Monroe.
He told Mid-Hudson News Monday night that he has not made up his mind yet as to which way he will vote, but over the years, he has most often voted with the Republicans.
