As the new year begins, political focus in Washington is increasingly turning to the 2026 midterm elections. Republicans are working to defend the gains they made in 2024, while Democrats are eager to reclaim control of the House of Representatives.
The fight for the House is expected to feature the most closely watched contests of the midterms, with control of the chamber likely to come down to a narrow margin. Republicans, meanwhile, hold a 53–47 advantage in the Senate, giving them a stronger position to retain control of the upper chamber in 2026.
Forecasts suggest Democrats have a realistic path back to the House for the first time since early 2023. RealClearPolitics currently shows Democrats leading the House popular vote by 3.9 percentage points, a margin that historically correlates with winning a majority. Mid-decade redistricting battles—from Texas to California to Ohio—have added another layer of uncertainty, with Republicans holding a slight edge in how lines have been redrawn.
Democrats are also buoyed by recent election results, including several wins or narrow losses in districts that had previously leaned Republican. Historical trends further favor the opposition party, as the president’s party typically loses seats in midterm elections.
Still, nothing is guaranteed. The race to secure the 218 seats needed for a House majority will be decided district by district, often far from Washington. Below are the House seats both parties are expected to heavily target.
