Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday criticized Democrat-led states for refusing to implement key provisions of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), calling their actions a form of “political obstructionism.”
According to a Fox News report, Bessent accused Colorado, New York, Illinois, and the District of Columbia of “deliberately blocking their own residents from receiving” the tax relief guaranteed under the law. He said their refusal “robs hardworking Americans of the relief they deserve and exacerbates the financial squeeze on low- and middle-income households.”
“By denying their residents access to these important tax cuts, these governors and legislators are forcing hardworking Americans to shoulder higher state tax burdens,” Bessent said.
In a post on X, Bessent shared a meme depicting New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker as “the Grinches Who Stole Christmas.”
Bessent said Trump’s tax package—signed into law on July 4—delivers “the most pro-worker, pro-family tax reform in a generation,” including measures such as “No Tax on Tips,” “No Tax on Overtime,” and a new deduction for seniors receiving Social Security.
He urged remaining holdout states “to immediately conform and stop punishing their citizens for partisan games,” emphasizing that the Treasury is ready to assist any state that cooperates.
“The American people voted for bold change, not bureaucratic roadblocks,” Bessent said. “This is about putting America first, starting with the families and workers who make our economy the envy of the world.”
