Russian forces advanced north and southeast of Myrnohrad and infiltrated positions in northwestern Pokrovsk, as Ukraine endured one of the most intense nights of aerial bombardment in months. The December 6 assault, coinciding with Ukraine’s Armed Forces Day, saw 51 missiles and 623 drones launched across the country.

Ukraine’s air defenses successfully shot down 30 missiles and destroyed 585 drones, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The strikes targeted residential districts, energy facilities, and rail infrastructure in 29 locations. At least eight civilians were wounded, including three in the Kyiv region, according to Minister Ihor Klymenko, who described the assault as another deliberate attack on civilian areas.

“The night was tough,” Klymenko wrote on X. “Russia again struck civilian infrastructure with drones and missiles.”

Frontline advances near Pokrovsk

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War confirmed that Russian troops have made incremental gains near Myrnohrad and Pokrovsk, but emphasized that Ukrainian forces remain unencircled as of December 5. However, the report warned that Moscow’s forces are attempting to complete the isolation of the Pokrovsk–Myrnohrad pocket, a maneuver that could threaten Ukrainian logistics in the Donetsk region.

Both cities lie in southeastern Ukraine, roughly 200 miles from the Russian border town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, placing them within range of frequent Russian ground and drone assaults.

U.S.-Ukraine peace negotiations continue in Miami

As fighting escalated, U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators convened in Miami for a third consecutive day of peace talks. The discussions included U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s senior adviser Jared Kushner, and Ukrainian officials Rustem Umerov and Andriy Hnatov.

The group has held six meetings in the past two weeks, seeking to draft a security and reconstruction framework for postwar Ukraine. In a post summarizing Friday’s session, Witkoff wrote that “real progress toward any agreement depends on Russia’s readiness to show serious commitment to long-term peace, including steps toward de-escalation and cessation of killings.”

He added that both delegations discussed Ukraine’s “future prosperity agenda,” a plan designed to stimulate reconstruction, bilateral investment, and long-term recovery partnerships between Kyiv and Washington. Another round of talks is scheduled for December 6.

Zelenskyy salutes troops amid renewed attacks

In a speech marking Armed Forces Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised Ukrainian soldiers for their resilience.

“I thank our servicemembers who, on the battlefield, do their utmost so that Ukraine has confidence at the negotiating table,” Zelenskyy said. “Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine.”

The overnight barrage — one of the largest drone assaults since the start of the war — underscores the growing intensity of Russia’s winter campaign as Ukraine braces for renewed offensives while diplomatic efforts for peace cautiously proceed abroad.
