Things have taken a major turn for Brett Beatty. The infielder who has dealt with many struggles
over the past couple of years has become red hot and left last night's game with an injury,
but has forced his way into consideration for more playing time moving forward due to his recent hot
stretch at the plate. What's going on guys? I'm Josh Byrne. You're tuned into Mets Digest.
Guys, thanks so much for all the support recently. It is not unnoticed at all,
and of course you can always follow us and download the podcast wherever you get your podcast. Now,
Brett Beatty is a guy that I have not been too easy on to be honest with you. I have had
many issues with his usage in the lineup to the extent that he's been in it, and to be honest,
he's starting to turn those perceptions around. When you look at what he has done this year,
it's not overly impressive by any means, but he has been one of the better players in baseball
since the All-Star break. If you look at what he has done since the All-Star break,
he's put up an 8-12 OPS, and you know, OCBaseball814 on Twitter points this out,
and this is a great point. He's been a quality bat whether people want to admit it or not.
He's not perfect, and early season wasn't ideal. However, it's easy to see what the organization
believes in. Now, I remember making a video about Brett Beatty right around the trade deadline,
and essentially, there was a report that the New York Mets Upper Brass was still very keen on
relying on Brett long-term because they believed he could turn it around, and I didn't see it,
but the facts of the matter are, he has been really good for the past month plus.
These are his ranks amongst Major League hitters with at least 100 plate appearances since the
and he's right up there in many, many key metrics, and he has especially been on an absolute tear
recently, which has been part of this whole Mets lineup making a ton of noise over the past couple
of weeks. The Mets are playing their most consistent, strong stretch of baseball right now
over the past month and a half, essentially since the trade deadline, and a lot of it has to do with
the offense. I mean, last night, 15 runs, what a game that was, but Brett Beatty left the game
early, and it was tough to see. I know that there's not, unless the Mets win every single
game the rest of the way out, a playoff spot on the line here, but for a guy that was ascending
and making major strides, to see him leave, you know, it's a little concerning. Now, the reports
are that he was diagnosed with left knee pain following his removal from Wednesday's game
against the Marlins. Beatty sustained the injury on an RBI single in the first inning,
prompting his removal from the game after being briefly evaluated by a trainer. The Mets are off
Thursday, and follow-up tests will determine whether Beatty will be cleared to play in Friday's
series opener against the Yankees. Now, that's according to CBSSports.com. George Richards of
MLB.com reported after the game that interim manager Andy Green said Beatty had a smile on
his face after the game. Quote, he thought he was going to be okay, Green said. We'll see what he's
like Thursday and get a better feel. I'm not overly concerned based on these reports about
Brett Beatty's health long term, but I do think that given his removal of the game, it's important
to point out the important tone that he's set in the lineup recently. He's been really good
for an extended period of time, and it's gone largely unnoticed.
Last year, Brett Beatty had his best season as a major leaguer, and this year he's followed it up
with a weaker season offensively, but one in which, as you can see, he has played many different
positions. And even when he was struggling at the plate, it was worth considering his value long
term because how many players across the league can play that many different positions? Third base,
first base, second base, left field, right field. He's even made a couple appearances at shortstop.
Wouldn't count on him there, but it's nice to know that he can do it if he has to go there in a pinch.
And 2025 was, you know, not a storybook year for Brett Beatty, but it was a career best season.
Put up a 748 OPS, and I think the expectations deservedly so were higher for him this year.
And so when he comes out and he has an OPS in the low 600s for most of the season,
now up to 663, it's disappointing. And you think about all the disappointing offensive performances
the Mets have gotten this year, whether you look at Marcus Simien, Boba Shett, who took a long time
to get going. Obviously, Jorge Polanco, the lack of health and production from Luis Robert when he
was on the team. Mark Vientos. I mean, the list goes on and on. Brett Beatty's among them because
even though he didn't have a defined role, a defined position early in the season, I think
we all knew he was going to get a lot of at-bats. So him getting off to the slow start that he did,
it was frustrating. But now he has shown yet again that he can at least be a useful piece.
You know, I'm not going to get up in arms over a 663 OPS or even an 812 OPS since the All-Star
break. But he is certainly a useful player. And I do believe he's worth holding on to for 2027.
This is his baseball savant. This is what it's looking like. A lot better
offensively than what it was appearing earlier in the season. And his feeling has been strong too.
And that's across many different positions. So, I mean, you're looking at a guy who he's got a
power. He's not going to hit for a high average. But he can play adequate defense
at a handful of different positions, which is something that gives the Mets roster way more
flexibility and separates Brett Beatty from a guy like Mark Vientos, who doesn't provide you
anything defensively, who can't play several positions. He can't play any position particularly
well. So, sounds like Brett Beatty's knee is most likely not too serious and we'll get more updates
today as it goes on. But yeah, Brett Beatty's been a real nice surprise here in the second
half of the season. He deserves some credit and he also deserves a role moving forward. Let me
know what you guys think about Brett Beatty and his future with the Mets down in the comments
below. And as always, guys, let's go Mets.
