Things are about to go down...
Oct 14, 2026
The regular season is officially just a week away
and the San Antonio Spurs are doing some
final little tweaks to the roster after they waive one new player today
as they're finalizing
that roster for opening night against the OKC Thunder
but we're not just looking ahead to that
we're looking well into the future as there have
been a whole lot of rumors about players that
likely be on the move this year.
The Spurs are not only in the middle of it but there are some
very interesting targets out there should San Antonio decide
to strike. We know that this team
it's good to run it back, but there
are some intriguing names that I think you will very
much enjoy that are reportedly on the trade block.
We're going to dive into all of that
and more coming up on this episode.
And look, I'm not saying the trade's happening right
now. I'm looking towards deadline, right?
Things change. Players move on. Players play
well. Players don't play well.
Certain contracts can get shed and we don't know what the future
holds for so many of our players.
Keldon Johnson, De'Aaron Fox are naturally going to be in
these talks, but that's not actually what I'm focusing
on today. Maybe a bit of a breath
of fresh air but anyway before we get
into anything thank you for watching the videos
one click of a like button actually helps us out a ton
and we're gonna get right into it that's all
i'm gonna say i'm gonna talk about
the latest spurs move wave rj davis i'm expecting him to
join austin now rj davis uh this dude phenomenal shooter
and look we i really really like him
actually uh and i know he's not a game changer by any means
but we've seen him in the g league
last year we've seen him you know get this exhibit 10
but ultimately we kind of saw coming that he
would be waived Spurs PR posted it yeah he's gone he's gonna go
to Austin almost certainly we have
his rights but Austin is getting someone really really really nice
and if you guys haven't paid
attention RJ Davis well you should have paid attention
in the summer league he was lighting
it up but last January 45 points
in the G League versus Salt Lake he shot 45.9 percent from three
in 36 games for the South Bay Lakers last year.
That is not a typo.
That is genuinely the number.
And if you combine, I think, regular season and playoffs,
he was still well above 40%.
Unreal.
So this, to me, again, it's not a move for your San Antonio Spurs.
It's a move for the Austin Spurs.
Hey, he gets his Exhibit 10 bonus,
which is up to $91,000 after 60 days in Austin.
We have his G League rights.
If you want a little refresher on the timeline, here it is down below.
Got his G League rights early September.
Signed him to a camp deal September 25th.
waved him today, October 13th, but look, that's okay,
because I think building up the G League
is something that I have been so huge on,
in terms of just organizational success as a whole,
and that's something the Spurs have thrived at,
and this year, we're looking to continue that,
55 plus wins, $25 against you, 34 on Calshi,
this video is brought to you by Calshi,
where you're trading against other users,
not the house of traditional sportsbooks,
you're buying yes or no contracts on real life events,
like the weather, like politics,
like your San Antonio Spurs how about
the number one seed in the NBA 25 that's almost 70 so if
you're interested in trying out Calshi use
the link in the description or pin comment trade 25
dollars when you use code digest nba get 55 bucks put
in your account instantly thank you to Cal
shi for sponsoring
this video i think spurs organizational success starts from down here
and it goes all the way up
but also it's never a bad idea to have some insurance for your main
guys this is what the roster is looking like obviously
for the main season now again whether
Tobias Harris is actually going to be the long-term starter
who really knows uh obviously
he's not going to start the season there this is kind
of my later projected lineup but also you
had spurs that are kind of like making a case for themselves
because we still got an open roster
spot available and i know RJ Davis was probably fighting
a little bit for it i would imagine
you know you kind of want him to you kind of want him
to be like can i get that no he couldn't quite
to do it but a guy like Jacoby Gillespie really did he's
not the subject of this Keenan talked
enough about him in the last video
so if you didn't check that I'll go do it but I love this
right I love the fact that these guys can have
a chance to make themselves known whether it's in
the G League or in the NBA
y'all remember Jonathan Simmons that was a different scenario but you
never really know and I'm really like again just
to remind you of what R.J. Davis has done in the
past like if any organization is going to find
a way to use him it's going to be the Spurs or like
maybe the Heat, because they also do that too,
and it's a bit weird, but anyway, that's it for
RJ Davis, one little final move, hopefully before the,
uh, probably not too, too more, many, too
many more, too many moves more, what is going on,
it's 11 45 p.m. for me, right as I'm recording
this, so anyway, uh, let's move on, uh,
and I want to talk about in-season trades, because I think
it's still a fun thing,
and here are some trade odds that have been listed, uh, these are on
Calchi, but you know, you can find these pretty
much everywhere, and you can see a lot of these
guys in a lot of different trade rumors um here
is their list of players most likely to be traded
by the deadline in terms of percentages there
are some names i like for like as fits for the spurs
there are some that i don't zach levine is one
that i love i'm not serious i'm kidding what can
you imagine no i am looking
though at a guy that i think everyone's sick of talking about in trey
murphy but there are some other sneaky ones
down there like michael porter jr who i've also
mentioned before he's been in some videos
and sneakily Daniel Gafford now Dyson Daniels is a
really interesting one too can you imagine having Dyson Daniels off
the bench a bigger contract
anyway I'm getting a bit ahead of myself
but let's just take a look at this first cap room
so what would we need to do well we're two million under
the luxury tax right now so any move that we
would make around the deadline if we don't want
to dip into that especially with like again the
big extensions coming up it's it's going
to be hard I think eventually we're going to probably
have to pay into the luxury tax
but you're not going to want to dive into that this year unless
you really find a move that you can't say
no to um i'm gonna briefly run over a couple of the guys
that we've talked about before as trey murphy uh
and michael porter jr i still don't think trey
murphy is feasible for the spurs just one
because of the money two because like we're talking four
first round picks we're talking three first round
picks i don't even really know like to me it just
feels like too hefty of a price for a guy that's going
to need the ball in his hands a little too
much on a team that's already has
so so much chemistry i know he brings a ton of what we love
like again if he was on the team tomorrow unreal he takes 7.7 above
the rate threes a game
he is a volume three-point shooter 98th percentile
in the league from there and he's also one of the
best spot-up points per play guys in the nba 94th percentile
in spot-up points per play and you're
telling me you have that next to Dylan Harper,
De'Aaron Fox, and Victor Wembanyama and Steph
Castle? Like, it's hard to argue that that's not an amazing thing.
Also, active hands, he gets some
steals, but he's not actually that great a defender.
A bonus shoot, 50.9% when he defends.
That is not good. That was last year.
That is 11th percentile in the league for a small forward,
so not great. And again, like I said,
the contract is something that makes it difficult. $27 million,
and I think he's more than worth it,
but as we look into the Spurs cap room, it would be a little
bit tough to manage to fit him in, right?
You'd have to move out guys like Keldon Johnson and
Harrison Barnes. That makes it work, right?
You only go up from $198 million to $199, and I think
that'd be fine, but now you add Keldon Johnson,
Harrison Barnes to expiring deals, and then like
three or four first round picks.
Are you really going to do that? Not necessarily. So off on him,
and i do want to just briefly mention michael porter jr
um he's a fun fit i i just i've seen
a lot i actually saw a lot of fans talk about him
in particular i saw a few tweets about this which
is why i was like i'm gonna talk about it i guess
and now recently he's been talking to Nets media
about how much he wants to win who cares
if you're putting up 20 points per game if you're not winning
like are we sure that that's his quote yes it
is I anyway he wants to be a winning player in his role
so if he manage to buy in sure he's like Harrison Barnes
on steroids roundtable says on September
2nd Michael Porter Jr is one of the best shooters
in the NBA would fit perfectly in San Antonio so
and again this is this is over a month ago
this is something that has been around I talked about
it last year he would be a fit
but like he knows the path to earning his next contract he's just
putting up the numbers he needs to prove he needs
to win this is the Nets this is a Nets page
saying this like yeah you know like it's just
and again if you look at the cap math for the
San Antonio Spurs um you would need to move off
of a lot of money like here the sample is just to
make the salaries match Keldon Johnson Harrison Barnes
and Tobias Harris like for 40 million
dollars again I just think the money doesn't make sense I'm saying
no to this but there's one more
name and and I don't I and and this is one
that I'm only interested in if things don't really work
out with our bigs the way we want them to or if there's an injury
or something because I think
right now Terrace Reed showed a lot
in the preseason it is not predictive he still needs
to show a lot in the regular season
but if the Spurs want to really bolster their center rotation
this one's interesting now again I think something would have
to go wrong with Cornette I know his
playoffs were not great and this is not a trade I would make like today
or anything like I just I
would not move assets to get Daniel Gafford
however Gafford is is a really interesting
option he has the most 20 point 20 point games
on 100 field goal percentage in the last five years
including playoffs six of them then it's Gafford
then it's Jared Allen then it's Walker
Kessler then it's Nikola Jokic okay well
that's really good super efficient at the rim Gafford
disciplined rim protection not jumping
at everything that's one of the problems with him
though right so like if he can be disciplined
not jumping at everything so that's what the
Spurs kind of need behind Wemby is something
that Luke Cornett is very good at it could work if you
dive a bit into what he's good at what he's
not so good at the offensive rating is not great when
he's on the floor assist turnover doesn't matter as a center
but his defense is good opponent field
goal percentage within six feet
which is exactly what you want from a center up there 90 plus
percentile in the NBA most like he's good
at putback look at where his shots come from 80
percent of them at the rim and i know you could
argue you might want a center that can stretch
the floor a little bit but i don't think you necessarily need
to really solid rebound rate
as well that's 91st percentile in the NBA 92nd percentile
for holding opponents within six feet
65.5 percent clip like just straight up field
goal percentage great lob target um you know
the issue here again is like where does he actually fit
the contract is reasonable the stats are fine
he's under team control for a few more years
but i just i don't know it's something you guys have
suggested too though from the comments Spurs should sign Daniel Gafford
so like this is something
that's been out there it's a name that I don't hate I think
the big problem with Daniel Gafford
is not the fit it's more
who are you giving up on and I think ultimately that's what leads into
this final bit here like we don't need to trade
for anyone I want you guys to answer the poll
who of these targets would you want Gafford maybe maybe Trey Murphy
or nobody run it back and I
think most of you are going to pick C and i would too
because i while i do like the idea of exploring
certain players to fit the roles
that the spurs need i just go until something goes wrong which
is kind of what i've been saying this whole video like
if something goes wrong you can go look at
Daniel Gafford but i'm saying
these are trade deadline moves man this is not what we're doing
right now there's no need i'm excited
with what we have i think you guys are too listen that will
do it i've rambled enough thank you though
for tuning in every single day season starts soon cannot
wait i've been your host Josh Goss and i will catch you later
